Timed Speechs

One of the effective games that support language learning—Timed Speechs

This game emphasizes oral proficiency. Student gives a speech for two full minutes. See how much and how well students can say something. It can be used as a class activity, a homework assignment, or even for assessment.

1)      Develop a speech prototype in class.
2)      Prepare a written draft based on the classroom development.
3)      Memorize the speech before class.
4)      Take two minutes warm-up before presenting.

1)      It supports speaking improvement.
2)      It makes mechanical exercises purposeful and exciting.
3)      It creates a listening opportunity for other learners.
4)      It gives continuity and progression to learning.
5)      It makes assessment natural and cumulative.
6)      It provides a cooperative learning experience.

    Tips:
1)      It is important to follow up on homework assignments. We regularly assign oral practice as homework. If students are asked to write a passage, they will be asked to present it memorized in the next class. However due to two considerations, we prefer the presentation to be timed.
The number of students in class and availability of class time; and
Training fluency of speaking and the natural and logical development of a speech.
2)      The requirement is to speak as much as possible for two minutes on a given topic. Of course, at early stages of learning, the speech will have to be developed in class, edited, prepared and memorized at home.
3)      It is not advisable to let students memorize a wrong sentence. Practice certainly will not lead to perfection if practice is done wrongly.
4)      Also, two minutes of warm up in class before presentations will help to relax the nerves and yield better performances.
5)      If a student finishes the prepared story less than two minutes, then he or she should try to add more relevant language. This is an opportunity to develop proficiency and flexibility when speaking naturally.

If the class is too large, divide it into groups of four. Designate one person as a time keeper.
However, the teacher must walk around the room and try to listen to some of every speech.
