In a language classroom, not only do we teach new communication mannerisms and tools through teaching the language, we also give them new perspectives and life experience that are in many ways different from their won. We provoke curiosity, nurture respect and love through achieving understanding and meaning in another language. We should encourage the development of their learning skills according to their cognitive capacity, one step at a time, through language learning and critical thinking.

Effective learning skills are gained through good learning habits. A teacher should guide learners to foster good habits in learning. Here are a few tips that help young students succeed in learning:

1.      Remind students to keep things in good order:

1)      Organize study materials.

2)      Organize notes.

3)      Organize study time.

 (　Make it routine or a requirement for students to do so. )

2.      Ask students to pay attention to details:

1)      When getting back homework, pay attention to the teacher’s corrections, and try not to make the same mistake twice.

2)       Provide opportunities for learners to discover patterns and rules, and define rules through summary.

3)       Encourage students to compare points of difference and similarity.

4)       Guide students to make connections between new learning, previous learning, and personal experiences.

3.      Invite students to ask questions about:

1)      something they are not sure or clear about.

2)      Something they are curious about.

3)      Something that seems odd to them.

How to improve my Chinese Listening ?
In many cases the speed of the the Chinese they are now hearing is faster than greased lightening on a luge run and they just can't deal with it.  The accent and speed they are accustomed to from their teachers is nowhere to be found, and this leads to confusion, self-doubt.

The answer to this question is a frustratingly simple 3 steps.

"Listen a lot!"
"React to what you hear"
"Repeat!"
Do this regularly and listening comprehension will increase drammatically and quickly.

Ok….let's look at these in turn

Listen a lot

To improve your listening you need to listen to natural Chinese a lot…as much as you can.  Sure you can listen to Chinese tapes and follow along with Made For Chinese CDs, but these rarely match real langauge in terms of speed.  People learning Chinese (or any langauge) need to get as much natural speed input as they can.

Great ways to do this include:

TV or radio news broadcasts, Net based audio (podcasts, audio files, video), joinging local clubs, volunteering, watching Chinese movies, TV, going clubbing, starting a club.

React to what you hear

Listening isn't enough.  students need to react to what they have just listening to.  This reaction allow the communication to continue in its natural way.  The reaction is what allows a student to confirm that they heard correctly, understood correctly, and could respond appropriately to the situation.

Sometimes this is as simple as continuing a conversation by responding to a question or trying to elicit opinions/information/ideas on the topic.

Other times it may involve writing: summaries, opinions, diary entries, reviews can be used to respond to what you've heard.

Repeat

Really simple here. Great, now do it again…and again…and again on a regular schedule, in different situations and on different topics.   Listening well involves more than just understanding the words.  It involves understanding the contect (the place) and being able to understand the language being used in context.

In the end what really matters for improving Chinese skills overall, not only Chinese Listening skills is practice and use. You need to get langauge into your brain and then you need to get the language out to be heard and read by others.
